Best Breakfast and Brunch

Breakfast and brunch foods increasingly overlap. I’m always a fan of a cafe that does an all-day breakfast menu, or, even better, all-day lunch. Some of these places are better for lighter foods (like pastries, toasts and granola) and others are heartier (cooked breakfasts). Cafés where the food is a secondary consideration (but they do amazing coffee or have great vibes) are not championed in this analysis. I’ve included order recommendations if they’re must-haves.

Top 10

  1. Saint Peter (Paddington; weekend only from 11am; the menu is entirely seafood.)
  2. Yellow (Potts Point; weekend only; order the corn custard dish; the menu is entirely vegetarian.)
  3. Lox, Stock and Barrel (Bondi; order something involving a fresh bagel)
  4. Kepos Street Kitchen (Redfern; and its sister Kepos & Co. on weekend only in Waterloo; order the bacon and egg roll)
  5. Bare Naked Bowls (Manly or Bronte)
  6. Room Ten (Potts Point; it’s a very tight squeeze so don’t come with over three people.)
  7. The Mews Mosman (Mosman; order the pork shakshuka)
  8. Paramount Coffee Project (Surry Hills; order the bibi; see the menu here)
  9. Efendy (Balmain; weekend only; order the feast)
  10. Shenkin (locations around Sydney, try Enmore; see the menu here; order The Forest)

Also Awesome:

Allegra Dining (Waterloo; try the mango pancake)

COOH Alexandria (Alexandria)

The Grounds of Alexandria (Alexandria)

Cuckoo Callay (Newtown and Surry Hills; order something with bacon)

Edition Coffee Roasters (Darlinghurst)

Social Brew (Pyrmont; see the menu here.)

Three Blue Ducks (Rosebery or Bronte)

Three Williams (Redfern; order a narnie)

Henry Lee’s (Redfern; try the mushroom chips)

Bills (Darlinghurst and Surry Hills; see the menu here; order the famous ricotta hotcakes )

Rukus (Newport; order the raw ensalada)

Flower Child (Chatswood)

Pablo and Rusy’s (CBD; watch here for yolk porn)

Harry’s (Bondi; order the ricotta hotcake)

Cuppa Flower (Waterloo)

Brickfields (Redfern; salads)

Still have to visit (withholding judgement on): The Nine, The Depot, Speedo’s, Marigold, Porch and Parlour, Daschund Coffee, St. Jude, Kin by Us, Cavalier Espresso, Fred’s, Brewer’s Tale, Le Monde, Mug Life, General Eatery, Labld, Panama House, Joseph Hyde, Excelsior Jones, Blackwood Pantry, Cairo Takeaway (Egyptian breakfast), HAM (Harry and Mario’s).

@harrysbondi 1️⃣Ricotta hotcake with blueberries, organic maple & double cream($19.50) // There was a great balance of airy hotcake and fruit, as well as hints of vanilla, cream and maple. Would recommend for pancake lovers. 2️⃣Bondi Reuben ($18) // was pretty disappointing. Would be much better if they hadn’t called it a Reuben, which makes me think of oozing melted cheese and generous layers of pastrami between slices of rye. This cheese had clearly been ever-so-slightly melted but was served solid (as pictured). A Reuben is a sandwich, not a burger. I enjoyed it and the pork & egg were great, but it wasn’t what I thought I’d ordered. And that price tag… #bondibreakfast #bondieats #harrysbondi #ricottahotcakes #reuebn #breakfastburger #sydneyfood #sydneybrunch #sydneyeats #sydneybreakfast

Truffle menu at @threewilliamscafe everything was delicious, but the price didn't quite match expectations. Truffle pasta could have done with some strong cheese, but the duck was beautiful (could have more duck for $35), all fries were delicious and tick for the chicken narnie. Vegan bowl yum but a bit rich with the dressing and Hummus and needed the turmeric chicken add on which we ordered.

@tripodcafe cops the first gram taken on the iPhone 8, which has a better camera than i anticipated. Finished off my friends’ bacon and eggs- the portion was generous for the price and the eggs were well scrambled (not too overdone)

The dream spread @sokyosyd their breakfast is so delicious and absolutely incredible value. $22.50 for a hearty breakfast and a drink. I ordered the Pork Katsu curry which was the best of the options. I strongly recommend ordering one of the authentic items as things like the Sumo Brekky or Eggs Benedict are disappointing. They are too small and nothing special. Next time will have to try the buffet! Would have gotten the buffet if they'd had some eggs or other more savoury options. #sokyobreakfast #sokyo #thestar #sokyoatthestar #sokyosydney #japanesebreakfast
